CA and Overland Storage Team Up to Speed Data Backup and Recovery

January 26, 2004
Alliance Gives Customers Faster, More Powerful Data Protection

ISLANDIA, N.Y., and SAN DIEGO, Jan 26, 2004 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Computer Associates International, Inc. (NYSE: CA), one of the world's largest software companies, and Overland Storage, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVRL), the leading provider of backup and recovery solutions, will jointly market a new, integrated solution for faster backup and recovery to their channel partners and end users.

The solution consists of Overland's REO SERIES R2000 backup and recovery acceleration appliance deployed with CA's BrightStor ARCserve Backup r11 for Windows software to enable high-speed "Disk-to-Disk-to-Tape" (D2D2T) backup and recovery.

The iSCSI-based R2000 is the first backup and recovery accelerator to be tested and certified with this latest version of BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows. Together, the technologies enable the simultaneous backup of multiple BrightStor ARCserve Backup for Windows servers to a REO appliance. Customers can now significantly reduce corporate-wide backup and restoration times, achieving up to a three-fold improvement in performance according to tests conducted by both companies. In addition, iSCSI technology gives customers Fibre Channel-class performance without the typical expense, complexity and administrative overhead.

"Customers are continually seeking ways to improve backup performance across their networks while simplifying media management at remote sites." said Nigel Turner, CA senior vice president of BrightStor solutions. "The combination of BrightStor ARCserve Backup and REO R2000 enables them to do just that -- minimize backup windows and leverage existing investments in CA technology."

High-Performance Backup and Recovery Acceleration

The combined solution leverages the high-speed backup capabilities of the REO to reduce the backup window and enable high levels of availability for business applications. This solution keeps application and data files available for near-instantaneous, disk-speed restores from the REO if needed.

In addition, tape archives can be created directly from the REO at the IT manager's convenience without increasing the backup window. Centralized management also eliminates the need for remote tape media handling. Finally, including disk-to-disk technology in the primary backup path can be integral to an overall disaster recovery plan.

"The REO SERIES delivers the fastest, most secure way to move data from disk-to-disk-to-tape," said Bob Scroop, vice president and general manager of Overland's storage resource business unit. "We expect that our REO SERIES combined with CA's BrightStor software will provide customers with high-speed performance, increased flexibility and manageability for remote site backup, and additional security."

For more efficient tape creation and media utilization, the solution is compatible with Overland's NEO SERIES or other tape libraries for a completely integrated disk-to-disk-to-tape backup and restoration solution.

Availability

The products will be sold separately through value added resellers, enabling customers to buy new software or upgrade existing licenses. The program will be rolled out to select channel partners and end users next month.
