By combining the disciplines of mathematics and computer science with molecular biology, Compugen leads the field of computational genomics and proteomics, the study of genes and proteins. Compugen's leading-edge products and services give scientists and researchers new tools to effectively analyze the vast amounts of new genomic and proteomic data, allowing the raw data to be transformed into useful information that can lead to the creation of new drugs and therapies.
When the company went in search of an effective data protection solution, its requirements consisted of two separate business areas. Compugen required backup of its internal network servers with corporate operations and research data, and also the servers storing the company's innovative Internet site LabOnWeb.com, the first-ever life science research engine. LabOnWeb.com is an online collection of gene discovery tools designed to accelerate work in the lab, improve the quality and accuracy of experiments, simplify the delivery of information and help researchers make more informed decisions throughout the discovery process. LabOnWeb.com's servers are housed in a co-location facility 50 miles from Compugen's headquarters.
Compugen selected two Overland Data LibraryPro automated tape libraries with Sony's Advanced Intelligent Tape(1) (AIT(1)) technology. One multi-terabyte library is located at the company's headquarters; the other is backing up data from Network Appliance filers and UNIX servers for the LabOnWeb.com site.
According to Gary Mulder, UNIX systems administrator at Compugen, the LibraryPro was a clear winner during a competitive product evaluation based on its small form factor, the modular scalability, superior feature set and remote monitoring capability of the Overland library.
"The features we liked about the Overland libraries were the modularity, of course," said Mulder. "There's no other product out there that has the modularity that Overland has. We could choose to have zero, one or two drives in a module so we could really add drives as needed. We weren't limited to a four-drive jukebox or a two-drive jukebox."
For the library installed at the co-location site 50 miles away, Overland's Web TLC(TM) (Total Library Control) was installed so Mulder can remotely monitor and manage the library via a Web browser from anywhere in the world. Web TLC creates a virtual front panel menu system, giving the remote operator full control of all library functions. "We're enthusiastic about the remote monitoring capability, because one installation is at a co-located facility 50 miles up the road from us. We don't want to be driving up there simply to find out the state of the library and have to do front panel administration. Web TLC enables us to manage the library from a Web browser as if we were in front of it, which is great. Administering a library remotely is a major time saver."
Overland's LibraryPro combines the company's ultra-reliable Mainframe Class(TM) robotics technology with the inherent advantages of Sony's AIT technology, which offers the highest data transfer rate, cartridge capacity, longest head life and fastest time to data of all mid-range backup systems in their price class. LibraryPro allows customers to scale the capacity and performance in increments for a customized solution to precisely match their specific storage needs, not locking them into restrictive monolithic library designs that dictate fixed drive and cartridge slot configurations.
Overland products are backed by the company's innovative Guaranteed Up Time Service (GUTS(TM)) warranty program guaranteeing 99% uptime performance and 100% data recovery, the only guarantee of its kind in the industry.
