Overland Enhances AIT-Based LibraryPro With Capacity, Scalability Upgrades

May 1, 2000

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 1, 2000--Overland Data Inc. (Nasdaq:OVRL), a technology leader in tape backup products, unveiled an upgraded version of its LibraryPro(TM) Advanced Intelligent Tape (AIT) automated library that more than doubles the capacity of the previous model and improves data throughput by 80 percent.

The new release of the LibraryPro boosts per-module capacity from 17 to 19 AIT cartridges while now allowing the automated storage system to be scaled up to nine modules instead of the previous five modules for a maximum configuration of 8.55 terabytes native capacity (up to 22.23 TB with compression) and throughput of 388 gigabytes per hour (up to 1.01 TB/hr. with compression) using Sony AIT-2 drives.

The new capacity, performance and scalability improvements extend the market leadership of the LibraryPro, which is still the only modularly scalable AIT library available as well as the most versatile AIT library on the market.

LibraryPro allows customers to scale the capacity and performance in modular increments for a customized solution to precisely match their specific storage needs, not locking them into restrictive monolithic library designs that dictate fixed drive and cartridge slot configurations.

Overland's LibraryPro combines the company's ultra-reliable Mainframe Class Robotics technology with the inherent advantages of Sony's AIT technology. The innovative robotics technology of the LibraryPro is based on the company's highly reliable DLT LibraryXpress(TM) design, which provides modular plug-and-play scalability, and which has won more than 20 editorial awards worldwide, unmatched by any other automated data storage product.

Sony's AIT drives offer the highest data transfer rate, cartridge capacity, longest head life and fastest time to data of all mid-range backup systems in their price class.

Along with the unmatched scalability of the LibraryPro, Overland adds simplified media management with a tape cartridge magazine design to facilitate bulk cartridge installation and storage as well as a convenient mail slot for individual tape insertion into the library. Additionally, the LibraryPro can be centrally administered from anywhere in the world with Overland's Web TLC, a platform independent management tool that uses any web browser to monitor, control and administer all library operations.

LibraryPro - and all Overland libraries and loaders - are fully Storage Area Network (SAN)-capable. Overland has certified its hardware with the leading backup and storage management vendors as part of their SAN product rollouts, including Legato's SAN Ready initiative, Veritas' Intelligent Network Attached Storage Device program and Computer Associates' Storage Area Network Integrated Technology Initiative (SANITI).

To simplify integrating LibraryPro into SANs, customers can add Overland's SANPiper(TM), a SCSI-to-Fibre Channel bridge that also provides the connection flexibility to be the centerpiece of a larger SAN configuration with full support for Fibre Channel hubs and fabric switches.

The upgraded LibraryPro is currently available with prices starting at $9,495. Upgrade options are available so existing LibraryPro customers can take advantage of the added scalability and throughput of the new release.
