Overland Teams With CommVault for Galaxy Backup Solutions

April 4, 2000

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 4, 2000--Overland Data Inc. (Nasdaq:OVRL), a technology leader in tape-backup products, today announced that its family of award-winning DLT(a) libraries have been certified for the new CommVault(a) Galaxy(a) storage and data management software suite from CommVault Systems Inc.(a), the first storage management software solution based on logical views of data, rather than the more traditional and limiting physical views common in the industry today.

Overland's support for the CommVault Galaxy software suite opens the potential for the creation of a new generation of reliable high-performance backup solutions, including storage area networks (SANs), by linking the legendary reliability of Overland's innovative DLTtape(a) automation solutions and the modular architecture of the Galaxy software suite.

Overland worked closely with CommVault Systems during the development of the Galaxy solution. By leveraging the product's modular design, the LibraryXpress(TM), MinilibraryXpress(TM) and LoaderXpress(TM) tape libraries were quickly certified by developing a common library control program.

With the ability to track data on its attributes, rather than its specific storage location, the CommVault Galaxy solution empowers the enterprise with the ability to seamlessly support existing LAN environments, as well as evolving storage architectures such as network-attached storage (NAS) and SANs, without the need for bolt-on products.

"CommVault has created a new software paradigm similar to the hardware-based modular scalability of our LibraryXpress, scalability that allows customers to implement the new capabilities on their existing IT framework, then grow with their requirements as they move into SAN-based environments," said Steve Richardson, vice president of marketing at Overland.

"The logical view of data tracking enabled by the Galaxy software makes storage administration a much simpler process for our customers' IT staff."

"Overland has been at the forefront of automated storage for several years with innovations such as the LibraryXpress. Their product's acknowledged reliability ensures that vital data is securely protected. The company's leadership in adopting new storage paradigms is accelerating the development of SAN-based backup technologies," said Larry Cormier, vice president, marketing and new business development at CommVault.

"We are delighted to have Overland backing our Galaxy initiative."

The combination of Overland's legendary reliability for its DLT automation products and the fault-tolerant capabilities of the Galaxy suite are expected to produce unprecedented reliability for backup operations.

The Galaxy software offers unparalleled reliability with its synchronized two-part fault-resistant indexing scheme combined with operational restartability that allows interrupted backup, recovery or administrative jobs to be automatically completed, from the point of interruption.

By comparison, other storage products require manual intervention when jobs fail, and if this failure is not detected, backups may never be properly completed.

Overland is the only supplier of DLT automation solutions that backs its products with a 99 percent Guaranteed Uptime Service (GUTS(TM)) Program. Combining the bulletproof hardware reliability of Overland with the sophisticated failure-proof Galaxy software ensures that valuable corporate data will be safely, reliably and automatically protected.
