Elsevier Science will now have one Overland LibraryXpress(tm)
DLTtape library at its Oxford site employed in vital Y2K compliance
testing, which is expected to be completed by August of this year.
The publisher has standardized on Overland systems for its
worldwide network, which backs up more than 530 GB of information in
daily increments of approximately 60 GB. The installed base of
Overland LibraryXpress units at Elsevier is currently 18.
The majority of these systems are located at the Elsevier Science
computer center in Amsterdam. Two UNIX servers, four LibraryXpress LXB
7210s, two LXG Global Control modules and six LXC capacity modules
handle data such as Oracle databases, Web site information, production
files, e-mail and word processing libraries from UNIX, NT and Novell
systems on the network.
The process is executed and managed automatically using ADSM
under UNIX operating systems. The company's New York and Oxford
computer centers each house two UNIX servers with an LXB 7210 and an
LXG.
"Backup is a bread-and-butter activity for any corporate data
center," said Wim Zwama, project manager at Elsevier Science. "It
simply cannot be allowed to fail. The Overland libraries have enabled
us to recover single files and whole systems in the field. They are
truly an install-and-forget box.
"Another major plus is the scalability of these systems. Other
solutions require you to make an unjustifiable leap to large-scale
units when your network grows. Overland's building-block approach and
the barcoding set its libraries apart from competitive solutions that
are not scalable or easy to configure."
"We are extremely pleased with the outcome," said Karel Auwerda,
IT Operations director. "Every night ADSM backs up to disk cache,
which then offloads to the Overland systems in parallel. The whole
process of backing up 40 GB of data takes about five hours at a rate
of between one and 13 GB per hour depending on the type of system and
number of files.
"Elsevier Science is looking to introduce more and more
automation into the backup and restore process," he said. "Our
ultimate objective is to have all data processing in one dark room
where everything is completely automated."

efficient storage solution possible," said Ton Hus, account manager at
Comparex, Overland's channel partner in Holland.
Of the 18 operational Overland libraries in the network, eight
are LibraryXpress Base units (LXBs), six are capacity modules (LXCs)
and four are Global Control Modules (LXGs), combined into four robotic
systems with a total native capacity of more than eight TB.
