SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2000--Overland Data Inc. (Nasdaq:OVRL), a technology leader in tape backup products, will showcase the advanced Storage Area Network (SAN) capabilities of its LoaderXpress(TM) storage automation solutions as a part of a serverless backup demonstration by Computer Associates International Inc. at the CA-World 2000 Conference, April 9-14 in New Orleans.
While Overland's LoaderXpress DLT autoloader will be demonstrated at Booth 950 at the CA-World Conference, all of Overland's award-winning DLTtape (see note) libraries and loaders -- including the LoaderXpress -- are certified and support CA's SAN operation under ARCserveIT (see note) as its Storage Area Network Integrated Technology Initiative (SANITI (see note)).
Overland will supply the tape hardware component of the CA serverless backup solution, a LoaderXpress LXL810 unit boasting 400 GB native capacity running with CA's ARCserveIT storage solution. Serverless backup allows direct data movement across the SAN from disk to tape storage without requiring any intervention from a host server, freeing the server from the overhead of backup operations and in the process enhancing the performance of other network processing and applications.
As another integral part of Overland's SAN initiative, the company recently announced its SANPiper(TM) SAN technology, a SCSI-to-Fibre Channel bridge. SANPiper gives customers easy access to Fibre-based SANs and new SAN-based applications, including LAN-free and server-free backup.
SANPiper operates seamlessly with all Overland automated libraries and loaders and provides up to four SCSI connections and up to six independent Fibre Channel ports with support for single-ended and differential SCSI and copper, short- and long-wave Fibre Channel interfaces.
As a key component of SANITI, ARCserveIT goes beyond support for serverless backup operations, allowing all devices under its control to be managed as part of CA's Unicenter TNG Framework.
The SAN-enabled Unicenter TNG Framework can identify and manage conventional and SAN-related storage resources such as Fibre Channel hubs, switches, bridges, volumes and tape libraries, making Unicenter TNG the only fully integrated management solution covering a broad range of network performance, status, software distribution, storage resources and other functions for the heterogeneous enterprise.
"CA is leading the drive for enterprise SAN solutions that fulfill the promise of the technology to dramatically lower the TCO for network storage," said Steve Richardson, Vice President of Marketing at Overland. "Integrating ARCserveIT into a total enterprise management structure makes the CA SANITI program a model for the industry. We are excited to be a part of this bold initiative that is changing the face of network storage."
Michael LaTorraca, Vice President Development Partner Programs for CA, said: "We're excited to have Overland as one of our key technology partners for our Serverless solution. The LoaderXpress with ARCserveIT are critical elements for a powerful serverless backup solution, delivering both extended native capacity and high performance on SANs."
Offering more than 3,000 informative sessions and technical labs, CA-World 2000 covers every aspect of IT, making it the most expansive conference of its kind.
