SAN DIEGO, Nov. 26 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Overland Storage, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVRL) today announced that the Cleveland Indians baseball team has been recognized by Network World as part of its prestigious, annual "Enterprise Network All-Star" awards. The Cleveland Indians received an honorable mention for its finesse in handling an interesting video storage and data protection challenge.
As one of the most technically advanced teams in Major League Baseball, the Cleveland Indians developed a sophisticated in-house video application to capture every at-bat during home games for training and advanced scouting. The system, which is accessible through a simple, touch-screen monitor, enables players, coaches and scouts to easily locate and view different images. To ensure greater availability of data storage, which had surged to 9 TBs and was growing by 2 TBs each year just in video alone, the team deployed tiered data protection solutions from Overland Storage.
The Cleveland Indians' game-winning implementation of Overland's REO(R) 9000 disk-based backup VTL appliance along with the NEO(R) 4000 tape library safeguards vital on-field video as well as crucial front- and back-office operational data. "Our Overland REO/NEO combination has enabled the Cleveland Indians to backup two-thirds more data in half the time while reducing our daily administrative overhead from 45 minutes to nearly nothing," says Whitney Kuszmaul, network manager for the Cleveland Indians. "In the past, restoring a video clip could take up to 75 minutes but now it's nearly instantaneous."
Network World editors honored the Cleveland Indians for their excellence in supporting the rapid growth of video applications while accommodating ever-increasing data protection requirements. The team recently increased SAN storage to accommodate up to 21 TBs through the 2008 baseball season. With a substantial amount of video readily accessible, the team now is evaluating Overland's ULTAMUS RAID storage array for holding up to five years of online video for expedited access.
According to Vern LoForti, president and CEO of Overland Storage, the Cleveland Indians lead the league with a best practices deployment of tiered data protection. "We are thrilled to see the Cleveland Indians receive industry recognition for their best practices in protecting crucial video and operational data," he says. "Overland also applauds Network World's decision to recognize this highly innovative example of how to extend data protection across a variety of storage tiers."
In its third year, Network World's Enterprise All-Star Award competition attracted more than 75 entrants, from which the publication selected the companies that best showed how to capitalize on emerging technology or implement more mature technology in new or particularly business-enhancing ways.
