Industry-leading SAN Storage Leverages SAS Architecture, RAID 6 Data Protection, Snapshots and Innovative DriveAlive Technology While Extending Tiered Storage Offerings

SAN DIEGO, Oct. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Overland Storage, Inc. (Nasdaq: OVRL) today unveiled its ULTAMUS(TM) RAID family of protected primary storage appliances that meet highly demanding capacity and performance requirements. Ideally suited for small to mid-sized businesses, workgroups and environments with enterprise-level storage needs, ULTAMUS RAID is a robust, affordable alternative to costly, high-end SANs as well as direct-attached and internal server-based storage.

The first models in the ULTAMUS RAID product line are the ULTAMUS RAID 5200, which offers industry-leading rack-space efficiency and a unique blade-based design to support up to 52 SATA drives and 26 TB of storage capacity in a single 4u chassis; and the ULTAMUS RAID 1200, which houses up to 12 Serial ATA (SATA) drives and 6 TB of storage capacity in each compact 2u rack-mountable enclosure. The ULTAMUS RAID family is designed to match the growing performance and capacity requirements of today's mainstream business applications with compelling features, including:

  • Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) architecture for high performance;
  • Standard RAID levels including RAID 6;
  • Multiple 4 Gb Fibre Channel connections;
  • DriveAlive(TM) technology for expedited RAID rebuilds;
  • Integrated snapshots for point-in-time backup and restores;
  • Dynamic capacity expansion;
  • Fully redundant, hot swappable components and cableless design.

"ULTAMUS RAID is a logical extension of Overland's tiered storage strategies, giving our mid-range customers powerful yet economical protected storage while leveraging the latest RAID, SAS, hot swap and cableless design," said Christopher Calisi, president and CEO of Overland Storage. "When coupled with Overland's proven REO and NEO backup and recovery appliances, ULTAMUS RAID delivers a highly complementary, scalable data storage and protection choice."

For Prowess Consulting, a Seattle-based developer of customized information management programs for software leaders such as Microsoft, keeping pace with evolving storage demands is an increasingly daunting task. In building capacity-intensive virtual machine-based demos and large volumes of webcasts, Prowess experienced tremendous data growth, which required an additional terabyte of storage capacity every six months. According to Nathan Johnson, IT director of Prowess Consulting, the sheer size and scope of the firm's development projects generated massive amounts of data, requiring an expandable, reliable storage platform. "Overland's ULTAMUS RAID blends advanced functionality, such as snapshots, with economical SATA drives in an easy-to-use appliance that will grow right along with our thriving business," he said. "By consolidating our server storage onto the high-capacity ULTAMUS RAID, we've deployed a 'future proof' solution that protects our overall investment while minimizing costs and administrative overhead."

To that end, Prowess Consulting projects a complete ROI on its ULTAMUS RAID implementation in less than 24 months. Additionally, the company is using ULTAMUS RAID combined with Overland's REO SERIES(R) VTL disk-based backup appliance and a NEO SERIES(R) tape library for end-to-end data protection. "Having the flexibility to store real-time, near-term and archived data in different places based on its critical nature or accessibility produces the ultimate peace of mind," added Johnson.

Overland's ULTAMUS RAID also includes patent-pending DriveAlive technology, which enables the use of high-density storage blade technology. Additionally, this innovative capability can eliminate the need for a full rebuild if a disk drive is inadvertently removed from an active RAID set. "Mid-range customers are looking for affordable ways to maximize uptime and productivity without incurring significant costs or straining already limited administrative resources," said Brad O'Neill, sr. analyst with Taneja Group. "The ability to offer both space- and cost-efficient RAID storage along with simplified set-up and management is a distinct plus for this market segment."

Availability

Currently the ULTAMUS RAID 5200 is available from Overland partners worldwide. The ULTAMUS RAID 1200 will be available at a later date.
