Tecmar Unveils New High Capacity WangDAT 9400 With Next Generation DDS-4 Tape Drives; Also Increases Reliability of Entire Family of WangDAT Drives

June 19, 2000

LONGMONT, Colo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 19, 2000--Tecmar Inc., an Overland Data company (Nasdaq:OVRL), today enhanced its WangDAT(R) line of 4mm DAT drives with the introduction of its first DDS-4 product, providing 67% higher capacity and double the data rate performance of DDS-3 products.

Based on the industry-standard DDS-4 format, the WangDAT 9400 delivers 20 GB of native capacity on a single DAT cartridge while boosting data rate performance to 2.75 MB per second. Built-in hardware data compression can double native capacity and performance specifications.

Tecmar continues its commitment to provide reliable next generation DDS products, and has improved its existing WangDAT family of drives with new state-of-the-art technology. All drives feature a 60% increase in MTBF (mean time between failures), a new three-year warranty and free technical support. In addition, all Tecmar WangDAT drives are now priced 11% lower than previous MSRPs.

Designed for midrange to large departmental and application server environments, the WangDAT 9400 drive provides a simple upgrade for existing DAT users. The drive is backward read and write compatible with WangDAT DDS-1, DDS-2 and DDS-3 tape drives, and utilizes an Ultra2 Wide SCSI, LVD interface. Additionally, all major operating system and backup software is supported, including market-leading products from Legato, Veritas and Computer Associates.

"DDS-4 is the next step in enhancing the performance, capacity and value of the DDS platform," said Michael Vaughn, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Tecmar. "DDS is a proven technology that has kept up with the growing demands for data, and DDS-4 is a natural path to meeting our customers' needs for capacity. DDS is still one of the best solutions for the capacity, performance and value requirements for departmental and network server backup applications."

The WangDAT 9400 continues Tecmar's reputation for high-reliability DAT solutions, with improved read-write heads, 10 MB buffer and built-in self activated head cleaner with LED notification when cleaning is required. The DDS-4 from Tecmar also has the internal head-tape interface chamber sealed to eliminate dust contamination. These design improvements and enhancements increase the drive's reliability over previous generation drives.

Tecmar is offering the WangDAT 9400 DDS-4 drives (as well as the DDS-2 and DDS-3) as internal units or external subsystems. The WangDAT TS 9400 internal drive has an MSRP starting at $1,145 and will be available in early July 2000.
