Overland libraries have been installed in SAP's sales and
consulting offices in Copenhagen, Denmark and Stockholm, Sweden. A
total of four libraries -- a LibraryXpress(TM) (LXB) 7110 and two
fifteen-cartridge LXS(TM) units back up data from a variety of NT(1)
and UNIX servers and Oracle databases containing SAP systems
information. The process is executed and managed automatically using
storage management software from Legato.
Prior to this arrangement SAP was using a DLTtape drive that came
with a Compaq ProLiant(1) machine. As the network expanded beyond
300GB, this system could no longer handle the demands and capacity
requirements. "We looked at Overland and StorageTek solutions," said
Christian Hasselbalch of SAP's network systems operation in Denmark.
"We were particularly impressed with the way the Overland unit worked
with the Legato software."
The systems perform a daily incremental backup of 5-10 GB. In
addition to the daily backup, a weekly 400 GB backup is done for the
system and a full backup of 1.67 TB is performed on a monthly basis.
"We had very high expectations of the Overland solution," added
Hasslebalch. "It had to be reliable and stable and I am pleased to say
it has performed with no real problems at all. Automation has been a
major benefit for us, we can now leave the system to run unattended
backup without having to manually switch tapes."
SAP is currently considering expanding the number of Overland
units in its network to include offices throughout the Nordic region
and also to upgrade the unit in the Denmark office to a 50-tape
capacity.
